2022 World Cup: ‘Ghana shouldn’t view Uruguay game as revenge’ – Andre Ayew

Ghana captain, Andre Ayew says the team should not use revenge as their primary motivation when they come up against Uruguay for the first time since 2010 at the 2022 Fifa World Cup.

The Black Stars controversially lost to La Celeste in the quarterfinals of the Mundial in South Africa over 12 years ago.

Uruguay and Ghana meet again in a final match in Group H of the Qatar 2022 Fifa World Cup on December 2 and most Ghanaian football fans believe it’s time to inflict pain on the South Americans.

But 32-year-old Ayew, who will lead the team in Qatar, has different thoughts.

“As a team leader, I don’t believe we should view this game as revenge.

“Instead, we must be smart enough to recognise that it is a match we need points from,” he said in an interview with Al Jazeera.

“We just want to win against Uruguay after everything that has been said in the media. As a player, if you go into a game with the intent of retaliation, you can make a lot of mistakes and be hyper.”

“We just need to stay calm, follow the plan and try to win the game, or do whatever we can to advance to the next stage.”

Ghana will also face Portugal and South Korea in the Fifa World Cup group stages.
