Resilient Samartex grab first GPL point at RTU

Real Tamale United (RTU) were held to a goalless draw by FC Samartex 1996 in their 2022/23 Ghana Premier League (GPL) opener Sunday afternoon.

Many expected the Northerners to claim victory against the newly-promoted side from Samreboi at their favourite Aliu Mahama Stadium but RTU failed.

The visitors, led by their experienced gaffer Annor Walker, played look confident and defensively solid from the onset.

Larry Sumaila formerly of Hearts of Oak and former Kotoko midfielder Emmanuel Keyekeh started for Samartex.

For RTU, talisman David Abagna started alongside Ronald Frimpong and Stephen Badu Dankwah in coach Baba Nuhu’s setup.

The home side should have opened the lead but Abagna saw his effort from the penalty spot saved by goalkeeper Richard Baidoo who was signed from Hearts of Oak in the 25th minute.

In the second half, not much was made in attack by RTU and Samartex held on to grab a vital point away ahead of their next league clash.

The Samreboi-outfit will play Berekum Chelsea. RTU also heads to Medeama SC.
