Legon Cities pulled off a surprise 1-0 victory against Real Tamale United (RTU) at the Aliu Mahama Stadium on match-day 3 of the 2022/23 Ghana Premier League (GPL).
The Pride of the North were chasing their first win of the season and Legon Cities were hoping to win their second successive game at the same venue, having defeated new boys Tamale City there just a week ago.
The first half ended 0-0 with both sides coming close to scoring.
On 54 minutes, the breakthrough goal arrived, an early goal of the season contender from Nasiru Moro for Legon Cities.
The Royals won a free-kick a few yards from the penalty arc and the 25-year-old midfielder was led on to unleash a belter into the top corner by a short pass from captain Jonah Attuquaye.
RTU were awarded a penalty in the 70th minute thanks to their performance after going down.
But captain David Abagna’s spot-kick got saved by Cities goalkeeper Sylvester Sackey.
The midfielder missed a penalty for the second time in this campaign, making him the only player to suffer the fate so far.
The latest defeat means RTU have one point from three games while Legon Cities have impressively responded to their shock opening day home defeat with back-to-back wins in Tamale.
Legon Cities captain Jonah Attuquaye won the man-of-the-match award.
