2022/23 Caf CL: Kotoko nick first-leg victory away to RC Kadiogo

Asante Kotoko opened their 2022/23 Caf Champions League campaign with a 1-0 away over RC Kadiogo in Benin.

The Porcupines left it late with winger Isaac Oppong’s 92nd minute goal at the Stade Mathueu Kerekou in Benin to win the first leg of the playoff.

This victory is Kotoko’s first competitive game of the season after their pre-season tour in Sudan last August.

Head coach Seydou Zerbo started John Tedeku and Ugandan forward Steve Mukwala led the team along with Georges Mfegue.

The clash was an open battle in the first half as both sides battled to break the deadlock under the Benin sky.

Despite dominating, Kotoko faced an uphill task in breaking the deadlock due to their faulty passes in the final third.

On their side, Kadiogo struggled to create decent chances and their guests held on till half time.

After the break, Kotoko still dominated while Kadiogo huffed and puffed for clear goal-scoring moments.

And the game’s intensity had been well slowed by the Reds who looked to end the game with clean sheet.

It was during additional time that the Porcupines gave it a last try and Isaac Oppong provided the winner.

The youngster picked up a long ball from midfield, beat his marker before slotting past the Kadiogo goalkeeper.

Kotoko will now host the Burkinabe side at the Bab Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday, September 18.
