PROMOTED: Tamale City complete 2022/23 GPL line-up

Tamale City FC have taken up the vacant spot that completes the 18-team 2022/23 Ghana Premier League (GPL) roster.

After demoting AshantiGold to Division Two football over match-fixing from two seasons ago, the GFA decided to organize a three-way playoff competition for teams that finished second in the three zones of the 2021/22 Division One League (DOL) to determine the replacement for the Miners in the upcoming season.

And the Citizens topped the playoffs – with 4 points – after playing out a 1-1 draw with Ebusua Dwarfs at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday.

Tamale City – coached by ex-Ghana midfielder Hamza Mohammed – took the lead via a spot-kick converted by Isaac Mensah in the 24th minute. But Richard Addai cancelled it out also with a penalty just 10 minutes later.

The two sides stayed locked on 1-1 till the final whistle.

This means the relatively young Tamale City side will be making a first-time appearance in Ghana’s topflight league having beaten Liberty Professionals 1-0 in their first game in the playoffs last Saturday.

Tamale City will have just about a month to get ready for their first game in the 2022/23 Ghana Premier League. They are set to join city rivals Real Tamale United (RTU) in using the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium as home grounds.

The season is set to kick-start on the weekend of September 9-12
