AshantiGold, Inter Allies lose demotion appeals

Embattled AshantiGold SC and Inter Allies FC have lost their respective appeals against the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Disciplinary Committee (DC) ruling to demote them to third-tier football for match manipulation.

Earlier in May, the DC finally announced its decision on the disgraceful scenes during 2020/21 Ghana Premier League (GPL) match-day 34 fixture at the Len Clay Stadium.

A player of Inter Allies, Hashmin Musah, climbed off the bench to score two dubious own goals.

After investigations, the DC was satisfied that both clubs, some officials and multiple players had been complicit in attempting to fix the score thereby handing them various punishments.

A number of individuals, in this case, were handed various sanctions ranging from 6 months up to 12 months while both AshantiGold and Inter Allies got demoted to the Division Two league as punishment.

A statement on the GFA website on July 14 read:

The Appeals Committee of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has dismissed the appeal cases filed by AshantiGold SC and Inter Allies FC against their respective misconduct decisions of the Disciplinary Committee.

Both clubs appealed the decisions of the GFA Disciplinary Committee after being found guilty of match manipulation in their 2020/21 Ghana Premier League Matchday 34 game played at the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium.

In its decision, the GFA Appeals Committee stated that evidence available to the Committee supports the conclusion reached by the Disciplinary Committee that the match was not played competitively or under competitive circumstances.

“We endorse all sanctions imposed by the GFA Disciplinary Committee on the clubs, players and officers,” the Appeals Committee concluded.

The Appeals Committee Decision has been forwarded to the parties.
