Andy Yiadom named Reading FC captain

English Championship side Reading FC have named Ghana defender Andy Kyereh Yiadom as first-team captain for the upcoming season.

“Our captain for 2022/23 will be Andy Yiadom, an experienced international versatile leader on the pitch and a positive influence in the dressing room,” the club announced Friday.

The right-back is also now one of the longest-serving players at the club; he has represented the Royals for the last four years after leaving Barnsley – a team whom he has also captained in the past – in 2018.

Yiadom was awarded Reading’s Player of the Season at the end of the 2021/22 campaign – and last month he agreed to continue his stay at the club by signing a three-year contract extension until 2025.

Manager Paul Ince said, “As I said when he signed his new contract earlier this summer, Andy is a perfect example to all young footballers. As a manager, it’s so important to be able to call on players who you know will give their absolute all to succeed, from the moment they cross the white line to the final whistle, players who play for their teammates, the fans and the crest. Andy is one of those players.

“He has the total respect of his teammates and the leadership qualities which will make him a great captain of this great club.”

Andy Yiadom has so far made 132 appearances for Reading FC. That tally would have been higher had it not been for a spell with Ghana at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in Cameroon last January.
