Legon Stadium completion moved to February 2023 – Sports Minister
Youth and Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif has revealed an extension of the completion date for the Legon Sports Stadium as Ghana prepares to use the facility to host the 2023 African Games.
The much-delayed project – from 2004 valued at $200 million – was envisaged by contractors Consar Limited to be ready and handed over to authorities by end of the year 2022.
But updating parliament on the progress of work, Hon. Ussif revealed a request for an extension of the timeline by two more months to February 2023 has been granted.
“It [Legon Stadium project] is progressing steadily.
“Our site meeting indicates significant progress in all the components of the project especially those facilities that are needed to be constructed for the 2023 African Games,” the Minister stated.
“The government has shown its commitment by paying the certificates which have been raised so far and I’m sure that by February 2023, the target for completing the project will be met.
“The project will be completed 6 months before the games to allow inspection and validation.
“With the innovative strategy adopted by the contractor and the strict monitoring by my office, I believe the project timelines would be met.
“Per the contract signed with the contractor, it was supposed to be done by December but the contractor through consultant applied for an extension to February that is why I have indicated,” Hon. Ussif explained.
The 13th edition of the African Games – Accra 2023 – is slated for August 4-19.
