Kotoku Royals seal maiden Ghana Premier League promotion

Kotoku Royals have been promoted to the Ghana Premier League for the first time after they firmed up top spot in Zone Three on the final day of the 2021/22 Division One League (DOL).

The Oda-based club travelled to hold fellow promotion chaser Tema Youth to a barren stalemate at the Tema AstroTurf Sunday afternoon.

Royals – who recently benefitted some boardroom points – entered the game leading the pack with only two points separating them from the third-placed team

Liberty Professionals, in second, were just a point behind leaders The Royals.

But the scientific Soccer lads failed to do their bit of winning at Susubiribi which would have meant a quick promotion back to the Ghana Premier League. They also drew 0-0 just like it ended in the battle between first and third at Tema.

Kotoku Royals thus finish top of the 30-game league in Zone Three with 63 points, earning them the right of a first-ever appearance in the Ghana Premier League during the 2022/23 season.

This means topflight football returns to the Eastern region for the first time since Power FC got relegated in 2007.

Weeks ago, the Zone Two race was decided with FC Samartex 1996 also winning a first-time GPL promotion.

Zone One heads into a playoff after Tamale City and Nsoatreman FC tied on same points – 71 – and matched each other too on head-to-head. The GFA is expected to decide on a suitable date and venue for the promotion decider.
