GPL Match-fixing: ‘Whistleblower’ Hashmin Musah to serve 6-month ban ONLY

The Disciplinary Committee of the Ghana Football Association has slapped a 6-month ban on former Inter Allies captain Hashmin Musah.

Musah deliberately scored two own goals as his side lost 7-0 to AshantiGold SC in the final match of the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League at Len Clay Stadium in July last year.

After the game, the defender claimed that he heard of a match-fixing conversation ahead of the game and threatened to ruin the bet.

“I heard it in our hotel that a bet had been made for a correct scoreline of 5 goals to 1 against my club Inter Allies.

“I decided to spoil that bet because I don’t condone betting.

“After the game, my technical team commended me for spoiling the bet they had staked.

“I promised my coach that if he allows me to play from the bench I will spoil the bet. And after the game, my team congratulated me.”

I was hailed for spoiling the bet with two own goals – Inter Allies’ Hashmin Musah

Just six months

Ten months on, the GFA Disciplinary Committee in a verdict after thorough “sporting investigations” into circumstances surrounding the said match decided to hand Hashmin – who now plays for US Gendamerie in Niger – a mitigated sanction due to the unconventional way he used to blow the cover of the manipulated league fixture.

“Hashmin Musah is banned from taking part in any football-related activity for a period of 24 months.

“However, the Committee has mitigated the sanctions due to the role he played in unravelling the fixed match.

“His sanction is therefore reduced to a period of six months and warned not to take the law into his hands but has a duty to disclose any such occurring to the GFA through the Integrity Hotline,” parts of a Disciplinary Committee verdict served the two clubs read.

In all, 35 individuals (players and officials) from both AshantiGold and Inter Allies suffered various degrees of sanctions for up to 10 years.
