‘My Kotoko move failed due to the displeasure of some fans’ – Fatau Dauda

Experienced goalkeeper Fatau Dauda has spoken publicly for the first time over his botched move to 2021/22 Ghana Premier League leaders Asante Kotoko.

In late January, it emerged that the 36-year-old had reached an agreement to join the Porcupine Warriors for the short term – until when the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League (GPL) season ends on June 19.

Dauda had been contacted by the top hierarchy of Kotoko as an emergency cover following the unavailability of third-choice keeper Rafiu Yakubu who was set for long spells out due to a training ground injury.

Kotoko were and are still short in numbers in the goalkeeping department with only Danlad Ibrahim and Kwame Baah left after transferring Razak Abalora to Moldovan side FC Sheriff Tiraspol.

But news of Dauda’s impending arrival was fiercely opposed by a section of the Kotoko faithful.

“I’m an experienced goalkeeper and my presence could have done a lot for the team even in terms of serving as a motivation for some of the players.

”But I think there was some displeasure from certain quarters of the supporters of the club.

“If you look at how important club fans are, you cannot underrate that. So it ended up that we had to shelve the plans in order not to spark any unrest within the supporters,” Dauda revealed on Angel TV.

Fatau Dauda has been a free agent since parting ways with Legon Cities prior to the start of the ongoing season.

He is capped 26 times by Ghana at the senior level including two games at the 2014 Fifa World Cup with his career seeing him play for clubs like Okwahu United, AshantiGold, Enyimba FC, Orlando Pirates, Chippa United and more recently Legon Cities.
