Kyereh on target as St. Pauli drop points in promotion chase

Ghana’s Daniel-Kofi Kyereh scored his 12th goal in the 2021/22 German 2. Bundesliga Friday evening as promotion-chasing St. Pauli were held to a 1-1 draw at home by FC Nürnberg.

It was a high-tempo affair from the outset with both sides looking to get forward quickly in a rather scrappy opening at Millerntor-Stadion. But there was no goal in the first half.

The Boys in Brown increased their efforts and fashioned the next opportunity, midfielder Christopher Buchtmann testing Nürnberg goalkeeper Christian Mathenia with a shot from inside the D.

And from the resulting corner, the referee pointed to the spot after a foul on striker Igor Matanović by Christopher Schindler.

Kyereh stepped up to take the penalty and sent the keeper the wrong way to give his side the lead in the 74th minute.

With the game entering the closing stages, St. Pauli gave everything they had to protect their lead.

But Nürnberg still managed to worm their way past several defenders in the box to shoot and the ball flew a whisker past the angle. It went into stoppage time and somehow the visitors produced an equalizer with substitute Taylan Duman firing into the bottom right corner from ten metres to deny the Boys in Brown a crucial home win.

The stalemate does not help St. Pauli’s promotion cause as they are likely to drop to position 5 in the standings with 54 points after match-day 32.
