“What a talent he is” – Otto Addo praises Afena-Gyan after Ghana debut

Coach Otto Addo has lavished praise on teenager Felix Afena-Gyan following his impressive display in Ghana’s 2022 Fifa World Cup playoffs first-leg against Nigeria Friday night.

The 19-year-old – making his international debut – was one of the best players in the barren stalemate at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium Friday night.

Afena-Gyan has enjoyed a meteoric rise in his career, where he has quickly become an important part of José Mourinho’s team at Italian Serie A side AS Roma.

The forward was a constant threat for the Super Eagles backline, particularly Leon Balogun. He held up play well and could have ended the day with an assist had goalkeeper Francis Uzoho not kept out Fatawu Issahaku’s powerful shot in the 32nd minute.

“Felix [Afena-Gyan] did very well, created a lot of chances, made good runs, gave his all in defensive situations.

“He did exactly what I wanted him to do. He is just 19, wow, what a talent he is,” coach Addo stated in his post-match briefing.

Felix Afena-Gyan had to be substituted in the 83rd minute for St. Pauli’s Daniel-Kofi Kyereh after picking up a cramp.

Ghana are guests to Nigeria again on Tuesday, March 29 in Abuja.
