U-17 WWCQ: Maidens breeze past Senegal into third round

The Black Maidens of Ghana swept aside Senegal on Sunday afternoon to advance to the third round of the African qualifiers to the India 2022 Fifa U-17 Women’s World Cup on Sunday.

A 3-0 win over the Young Teranga Lionesses at the Accra Sports Stadium means the Black Maidens have completed the double over their counterparts after winning the first leg 1-0 a fortnight ago.

Captain Georgina Ayisha Aoyem opened the scoring from inside the box after picking up a pass outside of the penalty area, ran past approaching defenders before hitting it into the net in 49 minutes.

Princess Owusu, who scored the only goal in the first leg in Senegal, doubled the lead for the hosts a minute to the hour mark.

She was, however, sent off with a straight red card in the 71st minute after shoving Senegal’s Ndeye Tida and kicking her further on the turf.

Abdulai Karima blasted home Ghana’s third after 73 minutes to wrap up the 3-0 win over Senegal.

The Black Maidens will face the winner of the second-round tie between Liberia and Guinea.
