Accra Lions leave it late to pip Dreams

Winger Fawzan Alhassan Dandawa scored on a header in extra time to give Accra Lions a 1-0 win over Dreams FC in a 2021/22 Ghana Premier League (GPL) match-day 20 fixture Saturday afternoon.

The hosts got off to a bright start at the Accra Sports Stadium with striker Fredrick Asante nearly registered the opener, only for his strike to hit a Dreams FC defender.

The visitors also threatened in the 29th minute with Agyenim Boateng Mensah forcing a brilliant save from goalkeeper Fredrick Asare. Five minutes on, Huzaf Ali hit the post.

Both sides went into the break with the scores at goalless.

Right after restart, Daniel Awuni forced a strong save from Dreams FC’s goalkeeper before Rich Sackey’s goal-bound header was cleared off the line.

In the 66th minute, Accra Lions coach James Francis introduced Fawzan Dandawa for Hagan Frimpong.

Lions upped their game as the clock ticked, creating chances after chances.

But Dreams FC provided them with another scare when Agyenim Boateng hit the cross bar in the 82nd minute.

The referee added five minutes, and it was all Accra Lions, leading to substitute Fawzan Dandawa notching the winner. The youngster rose high to head home an Abass Samari cross from the right to seal the game in stoppage time.

The solitary goal victory sees Accra Lions climb to position 12 with 24 points – two spots and points respectively behind Dreams FC who are in 10th after 20 matches.
