Medeama down Bechem with controversial injury-time penalty

Medeama SC claimed a 1-0 win over second-placed Bechem United in the Ghana Premier League match-week eighteen fixtures on Sunday.

Vincent Atinga’s late penalty goal helped the Yellow and Mauves to their 8th victory of the season which in turn, is Bechem’s fourth loss of the campaign.

The defeat extends the points gap between the Hunters and Asante Kotoko, who won against Dreams FC, to ten points.

It was an even game in the first half as both sides pulled off some sharp saves from the two goalkeepers, John Moosie for Medeama and Abdulai Iddrisu for Bechem United.

The home side improved in the second half amid massive support from the Tarkwa and Aboso Park fans, who needed a win after seeing their beloved outfit lose shockingly to Dreams last Monday.

But Bechem United proved solid at the back.

The visitors showed exceptional zonal marking with superb aerial strength and were close to picking a point until additional time when Medeama were controversially awarded a penalty. Regular taker Vincent Atingah stepped up and scored from the spot.

The win places Medeama fifth on the log awaiting the results of  Great Olympics’ game against Real Tamale United on Monday.

Bechem are on 30 points and will play league leaders Asante Kotoko in their next game on Tuesday, March 8.

Medeama travel to Bibiani GoldStars in their next game.
