Milovan Rajevac out as Ghana coach over disastrous Afcon 2021 outing

Milovan Rajevac has been fired as head coach of the Ghana senior national team.

The 68-year-old supervised the Black Stars’ worst campaign in Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) history at the ongoing 2021 edition in Cameroon.

An emergency meeting between the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) on Friday ended with the former categorically stating that “the people of Ghana have lost confidence in the capacity of the current technical team of the Black Stars to deliver success” and went on to ask “the GFA to review the work and capacity of the Black Stars’ technical team, led by the head coach, Milovan Rajevac.”

Reports have emerged Saturday morning that the GFA has budged in despite initial resistance to relieve the Serbian of his duties after three months and 30 days into his second stint.

An official statement on the decision is expected any time soon from the GFA.

Ghana exited the 33rd edition of the Afcon at the group phase. It was the first time in 16 years after an embarrassing 3-2 defeat to Comoros.

The four-time African champions, on a 40-year Afcon trophy drought, finished bottom of Group C after also losing 1-0 to Morocco and drawing 1-1 against Gabon in their first two games, bowing out of the tournament without a win.

Milovan Rajevac – who led Ghana at the 2010 World Cup – was reappointed on September 24, 2021.
