Asumah Abubakar joins FC Luzern on two-and-half-year deal

After only a full calendar year at FC Lugano, Ghana forward Asumah Abubakar has moved on to sign for fellow Swiss Super League competitors FC Luzern in the January 2022 transfer window.

The 24-year-old – who has represented Portugal at the youth level – has signed a contract until June 30, 2024 – two-and-a-half years, his new club announced Friday.

“We are convinced that Asumah Abubakar will strengthen us with his qualities on the offensive,” said sports director Remo Meyer on the occasion of the signing of the contract.

“He’s a constant source of trouble on the field and also has the necessary scorer qualities that we need.”

Central Switzerland is no new territory for Asumah. From 2019 to 2020 he played for SC Kriens for a season and a half. During this time, he scored 22 goals and 10 assists in 50 games for Kriens. That piqued the interest of FC Lugano, where he moved to in January 2021 and has now left after scoring 6 goals and made 4 assists in 42 games in all competitions.

“Both clubs have agreed not to disclose the transfer modalities.”

Asumah Abubakar will train with his new FC Luzern mates for the first time this afternoon and will wear the number 21 shirt at the club.

FC Luzern are battling relegation from the Swiss top-tier. They are bottom of the 10-team league standings.
