Afcon 2021: Ghana knocked out after shock defeat to Comoros

This is the first in 23 outings that the Black Stars have come out of the tournament without recording a win.

Ghana crashed out of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) at the group stage after a 3-2 defeat to Comoros Tuesday night.

Debutants Comoros took a surprise lead after four minutes into the game at Stade Omnisport Roumdé Adjia in Garoua through captain Ben Mohamed.

Things then got worse for the Black Stars in the 25th minute when skipper Andre Ayew was shown a red card after a coming together that saw the Comoros goalkeeper come off worse injured and substituted from the game.

Malian referee Boubou Traore’s attention was drawn for a VAR check after which he sent off Ayew.

Ahmed Mogni extended the lead to 2-0 for Comoros in the 62nd minute.

The Black Stars responded with goals from substitute Richmond Boakye and centre-back Alexander Djiku scored in the 64th and 77th minutes respectively to make it 2-2.

But Ahmed Mogni claimed his second of the game with five minutes left to seal a famous 3-2 win for Comoros.

Ghana bow out of the 33rd Afcon tournament in Cameroon with just one point from three games in Group C. They lost 1-0 to Morocco in their first game and drew 1-1 with Gabon in the second.

In the Black Stars’ 23 Afcon outing record, this is the first time the team has featured at the finals without a win.
