Afcon 2021: Gabon star Aubamayang recovers from COVID, available for Ghana clash

Star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will be hoping to feature for the first time at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) for Gabon against Ghana on Friday after recovering from COVID-19.

The Panthers’ record scorer and captain tested positive for the virus after arriving in Cameroon from Dubai for the tournament about a week ago.

The 32-year-old was duly forced to isolate and he missed Gabon’s opening game against Comoros on Monday.

Gabon won 1-0 in his absence thanks to Aaron Boupendzas’ goal and now Aubameyang is hoping to return to action for Friday’s Group C meeting with Ghana.

Aubameyang trained on Wednesday as normal likewise midfielder Mario Lemina who was also out with COVID.

His return is a huge boost for the Panthers who will be hoping to record a win and early qualification to the knockout stage of the tournament.

Gabon, however, have been hit by more COVID cases in their camp and will be without more players for Friday night’s game.

Should Aubameyang be fielded in the Black Stars clash, he will come up against his Arsenal teammate Thomas Partey.

Ghana will be looking to bounce back after losing their opening game to Morocco on Monday.

Kickoff is 19:00 GMT.
