Soccer Intellectuals defeated Berry Ladies 1-0 to take charge of Group A of the novel Women’s Premier Super Cup competition at Madina Zurak Park on Thursday.
The two sides entered the second game of the opening day knowing victory will see them top the standings, having witnessed favourites Ampem Darkoa settle for a 2-2 draw with Prisons Ladies in the tournament opener played in the morning.
Soccer Intellectuals, the team from the Central Region, took their clearest chance early against a Berry side who were playing at their home grounds and held it firm till the blast of the final whistle.
Jennifer Adjei Mensah got the goal in the 25th minute. Finding herself free with a loose ball after a big boot from a free-kick hit from the centre, the 17-year-old swiftly hit low past Berry goalkeeper Portia Asante.
Berry Ladies – who were without head coach Mercy Tagoe-Quarcoo – struggled to put up a fight especially up front while Intellectuals also failed to increase their tally despite creating some decent chances.
Soccer Intellectuals captain Linda Addai was named Woman-of-the-Match.
