Thompson Quartey becomes first coaching casualty in the 2021/22 GPL

Ernest Thompson Quartey has become the first 2021/22 Ghana Premier League (GPL) head coach to get the axe after he was relieved of his duties by AshantiGold Monday.

The Caf license A holder has been sacked after just three games in the new season.

Thompson Quartey, who was only appointed prior to the start of the campaign, occupied the position for just about 75 days.

The Miners began the new season on a bright note, winning three points away on the opening day against Eleven Wonders. AshantiGold drew their first home game against Karela United on match-day two before losing 2-0 to regional rivals King Faisal FC on Sunday.

A call for the head of the former Ebusua Dwarfs trainer intensified right after Sunday’s defeat in Kumasi and the AshantiGold management appeared to have heeded to agitations from a section of the fanbase.

Club sources indicate the coach was called into an emergency meeting on Monday morning where he was told of the decision to dispense with his services.

Thompson Quartey referred the club to his contract and asked management to the clause for the termination of his deal

AshantiGold are scheduled to host champions Hearts of Oak in their next league match on Sunday, November 21.
