2022 WCQ: Edmund Addo gets maiden Black Stars invite for November qualifiers

FC Sheriff Tiraspol midfielder, Edmund Addo has received his first senior call-up for Ghana’s 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers against Ethiopia and South Africa.

Coach Milovan Rajevac handed the Black Stars debut invitation to the 21-year-old following his impressive performance at club level.

Addo’s first senior call-up nearly came a month earlier but Ghana were unsuccessful with his Moldovan club rejecting a rather belated invitation – it came outside the mandatory time set by Fifa. Ghana had, at the time, learnt of the unavailability of Fiorentina midfielder Alfred Duncan and needed to replace him.

After that episode, Rajevac followed up on the youngster with a visit to Italy to watch him play against Inter Milan in the Uefa Champions League.

Addo has played a key role in FC Sheriff’s fairytale run in this season’s Champions League which has seen them record wins over Real Madrid and Shakhtar Donetsk.

He has appeared 19 times in all competitions this season and joins the Black Stars with enough playing time.

Ghana will take on Ethiopia on Thursday, November 11 at Orlando Stadium in South Africa before hosting Bafana Bafana on Sunday, November 14 at Cape Coast Stadium.

The Black Stars are second in Group G with 9 points—one point behind leaders South Africa.

Rajevac must win both games to leapfrog the Bafana Bafana at the top of the group to make it to the playoffs for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
