2021/22 GPL: Match Review Panel suspends four referees

The Match Review Panel of the GFA has suspended four referees in the four-week-old 2021/22 Ghana Premier League (GPL).

The referees affected include Mahama Ewuntoma, Eso Doh Morrison, Gabriel Opoku Arhin and Andrew Awurisa due to poor decisions.

Their suspensions follow after affected clubs lodged complaints on decisions that went against them in games to the Match Review Panel.

Gabriel Opoku – who was the centre referee in Asante Kotoko’s match-day two home game against Bechem United – failed to send defender Abdul Ganiyu Ismail after a harsh tackle on Emmanuel Avonyor in the second half. He has been suspended for six match days for failing to send Ganiyu off after what was described as a career-threatening tackle.

Mahama Ewuntoma has also been banned for six games for a technical error which resulted in Karela getting a penalty against Berekum Chelsea in the opening round of the GPL.

Esso Doh Morrison – who officiated Hearts of Oak’s 1-1 against Aduana FC – has also been banned for 8 games for awarding the latter a dubious penalty and taking key decisions against the Phobians.

Referee Emmanuel Azurago Tampuri and Maxwell Hanson were also commended for decisions taken in matches their respective matches by the Match Review Panel.
