2022 Women’s AfconQ: Black Queens lose 2-0 to Nigeria in first leg

An Uchenna Kanu first-half double gave Nigeria a 2-0 first-leg win over the Black Queens of Ghana in the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers Wednesday afternoon.

The Linköpings FC forward scored twice in five minutes midway through the first half to give the Super Falcons a comfortable lead at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos, and that’s how it stayed till full time.

Uchenna gave the hosts the lead by nodding home a cross from Francisca Ordega in the 20th minute.

Five minutes later, the 24-year-old doubled the advantage with her brace by racing from behind to connect to a Toni Payne inch-perfect cross after a corner kick from the left was taken short by defender Onome Ebi.

Trailing 2-0, the Black Queens improved their game in the second half – enjoying some dominance in the first 20 minutes but could just not reward the efforts with a goal.

Three minutes from time, Queens captain Portia Boakye had to be subbed off after coming off worse in a penalty box clash with her opposite number Asisat Oshoala who missed a gilt-edged chance for Nigeria earlier on.

It’s a 2-0 advantage for Nigeria but this tie will be decided by a second leg scheduled for the Accra Sports Stadium at 3 pm on Sunday, October 24.

The aggregate winner will advance to face either Niger or Cote d’Ivoire in the final qualifying round to the Morocco Women’s Afcon next year.
