2022 WCQ: Cape Verde rally to beat Liberia 2-1 in Accra

Cape Verde rallied from behind to beat host Liberia 2-1 in a 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifying match-day three encounter at the Accra Sports Stadium Thursday afternoon.

A first-half Van-Dave Harmon stoppage-time effort had put the Lone Stars ahead at the break, but second-half goals from Jamiro Monteiro and Garry Rodrigues were enough to secure victory for the Blue Sharks.

The win means Pedro Leitao Brito’s side is now on four points in Group C of the African qualifiers, behind Nigeria.

Liberia sits bottom of the group with three points.

Harmon’s close-range strike off Moussa Sanoh’s cross was deflected into Evora Dias’ net in first-half injury time for the opener of the game.

Philadelphia Union midfielder Monteiro, who was on the field for only 8 minutes, thumped in from the middle of the box to pull parity for Cape Verde in the 52nd minute.

Rodrigues then belted in the winner from some 30 yards out to snatch victory for the Blue Sharks in the 92nd minute.

The two teams will face off again in the 4th round at the Estadio Municipal Aderito Sena, Mindelo, Cape Verde, on October 10.
