Someone with my genes will win an Afcon if I don’t – Asamoah Gyan

Black Stars legend Asamoah Gyan has not been lucky in his adventures for the national team at the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) since featuring in the Ghana 2008 edition.

The all-time national team top-scorer has played in seven editions of Africa’s flagship competition, losing in two finals to Egypt in 2010 and Ivory Coast in 2015.

In Ghana’s next Afcon, which is scheduled for Cameroon in January, Gyan hopes to earn a spot in Charles Akonnor’s squad for the competition.

The former Sunderland attacker will be making what could possibly be his last attempt at the competition but if Ghana fails again, Gyan feels someone from his generation will win the title one day.

“Not winning the Afcon till now is a bit frustrating. I always ask myself why because I was in a generation that could have won the African Cup easily.

“But sometimes I also tell myself that if I could not win it, somebody in my genes can win it,” Gyan told 3Sports.

“Personally, I am satisfied with what I have done. People may disagree but for those who understand football, they know.”

Asamoah Gyan has netted 51 times for the Black Stars and is Africa’s top scorer at the Fifa World Cup with 6 goals.

But international titles? The Africa Cup of Nations in January next year will be his moment.

The tournament, postponed twice due to wet weather concerns and COVID-19, will run from January 9 to February 6, 2022.
