LATE ONE: Daniel-Kofi Kyereh gets first Ghana call-up for World Cup qualifiers

Germany-based forward, Daniel-Kofi Kyereh has been handed his first Ghana senior call-up, albeit a late one, for the September international break.

The Black Stars, would during the window, kickstart their campaign in the African qualifiers to the Qatar 2022 Fifa World Cup.

Housed in Group G, Ghana are scheduled to host Ethiopia and then visit South Africa on September 3 and 6 respectively.

Kyereh plays for FC St. Pauli in the German 2. Bundesliga. He has scored once in five appearances so far in the new 2021/22 season.

The 25-year-old caught the attention of many with breathtaking goals in his debut season for St. Pauli last term but is now getting a chance from Ghana boss CK Akonnor who risks losing a number of top stars due to decisions by some European clubs to block their players from travelling for national team duties in COVID-19 red-list countries.

As things stand, England-based players like Daniel Amartey (Leicester City), Jordan Ayew (Crystal Palace), Tariqe Fosu-Henry (Brentford FC), Baba Abdul Rahman (Reading FC) and Andrew Yiadom (Reading FC) – who were named in a provisional 30-man squad – can only honour the Ethiopia game in Cape Coast and will not travel with the team to South Africa for the second qualifier on September 6.
