Ethiopia defeated Uganda 2-1 in an international friendly at Bahir Dar Stadium on Sunday as both teams intensify preparations for the start of their 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers.
The Walias took the lead through Nasir Abubaker in the 11th minute in Micho’s first game as Cranes of Uganda coach in his second stint.
Abel Yelew doubled the lead for Ethiopia in the 54th minute.
Yunus Ssentamu’s long-range strike two minutes later was not enough to salvage the day for the Ugandans.
The Cranes were on the back foot for the best part of the game as the hosts controlled proceedings.
It’s the first loss for the Cranes against Ethiopia since 1988 in the Cecafa Cup, with a similar scoreline as Sunday’s.
Micho’s side’s hopes of starting their World Cup qualifiers with a good result is dented.
Uganda faces the Harambee Stars away in Kenya on September 2 before hosting Mali four days later.
Ethiopia, who earlier played out a goalless draw with Sierra Leone, visit Ghana on September 3 and host Zimbabwe four days later in the World Cup qualifiers.
