2020/21 MTN FA Cup: AshantiGold reach final with extra-time win over Berekum Chelsea

The Miners come this close for the first time since their only win in 1993.

AshantiGold beat 10-man Berekum Chelsea 4-1 in extra time Sunday afternoon to reach the grand finale of the 2020/21 MTN FA Cup.

After a 1-1 stalemate in regulation time, the Miners scored three extra-time goals to win the first semifinals clash at Cape Coast Sports Stadium.

Midfielder Eric Esso opened the scoring with a well-curled free-kick three minutes into first-half injury time.

But striker Stephen Sarfo came off the bench for Paul Atta Agyei in the 49th minute and equalized for the Bibires with his second touch within two minutes.

No goal was further produced, pushing the game into extra time.

Just two minutes into extra time, Amos Kofi Nkrumah fired AshantiGold back in the lead with a powerful strike from distance into the roof of the net.

In the ensuing two minutes, Berekum Chelsea went a man down as Benjamin Abaidoo received a red card for a second offence after shoving winger Amos Addai in the back.

Frank Akoto, with a long pass from the Miners’ half, found winger Amos Addai who rounded the keeper and hit home with a composed finish in the 105th minute.

AshantiGold then went 4-1 up in the 117th minute through Seth Osei who was just at the right spot to finish off after Amos Nkrumah’s initial shot was parried away by the Berekum Chelsea goalkeeper.

Now in the August 8 final, AshantiGold await one of Hearts of Oak and Medeama SC who face off next at 18:50 GMT.
