2020/21 MTN FA Cup: Kotoko oust Asokwa Deportivo, reach quarterfinals

Asante Kotoko became the first team to enter the quarterfinals of the 2020/21 MTN FA Cup after beating second-tier side Asokwa Deportivo 2-1 Tuesday afternoon.

The Round of 16 clash at Len Clay Stadium saw the Porcupines taking a two-goal first-half lead before the visitors pulled one back in an unsuccessful comeback attempt in the second 45 minutes.

Brazilian Fabio Gama converted a penalty in the 12th minute after striker Andy Kumi was kicked from behind in the box.

Evans Adomako then finished off a pass inside the box from left-back Ibrahim Imoro to make it 2-0 in the 37th minute.

Asokwa Deportivo managed to halve the deficit through Asamoah Boateng with a beautiful build-up play in the 55th minute.

Buoyed by the goal, the Division One side dominated play creating numerous chances but had Kotoko’s returnee first-choice goalkeeper Razak Abalaora denying them the equalizer.

Kotoko held on to win 2-1 and enter the quarterfinals awaiting 7 other teams to be determined on Wednesday and Thursday.
