2020/21 GPL: Hearts of Oak are champions with a game to spare
The Phobians claim their 21st league title after a 12-year wait.
Hearts of Oak are confirmed winners of the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League with a game to spare after drawing 1-1 at home to Liberty Professionals Sunday afternoon.
It is the Phobians’ 21st league title and ends their 12-year drought – the last triumph coming in the 2008/09 season on July 19, 2009.
Daniel Afriyie Barnieh put Hearts in the lead deep into first-half stoppage time by connecting a Salifu Ibrahim corner kick with a header from near post.
Liberty found the equalizer – also from a headed effort – in the 87th minute through Paul Kwame.
With the match-day 33 fixture ending 1-1 at the Accra Sports Stadium, the one point proved enough for Hearts to be confirmed as Premier League champions courtesy of second-placed Asante Kotoko’s 2-1 loss at Bechem United.
The result at Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park means Hearts of Oak have an unassailable 4-point lead over Kotoko heading into the final game of the season.
