Liberty sink deeper after humiliating home defeat to AshantiGold

Liberty Professionals slumped to a humiliating 5-1 home defeat to AshantiGold on Thursday, sinking back into relegation trouble after match-day 30 of the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League.

Midfielder Simon Appiah struck a free-kick low on 18 minutes to put the hosts in the lead at their adopted Sogakope home grounds.

The Miners, however, turned things around and battled from a goal down with a quickfire brace and another goal in first-half stoppage time to lead 3-1 at the break.

Winger Amos Kofi Nkrumah snatched the equalizer in the 34th minute after a long spell of pressure.

Central midfielder David Abagna then gave AshantiGold a 2-1 lead four minutes later.

In the 2nd minute of injury time, Amos Addai also scored to ensure the visitors led by a two-goal margin heading into recess.

AshantiGold continued their momentum in the second half and scored two more goals.

In-form Seth Osei scored for the successive game on the hour mark while defender Frank Akoto hit the final nail in the coffin with his goal in the 65th minute.

The massive turnaround victory lifts AshantiGold to ninth on 40 points. Liberty are now second from bottom of the 18-team league standings with 32.

AshantiGold’s Stephen Owusu Banahene was named NASCO man-of-the-match.
