Hearts beat Legon Cities to top table ahead of #SuperClash

Hearts of Oak ensured they will go into the weekend’s Super Clash with arch-rivals Asante Kotoko as leaders by beating Legon Cities 2-1 in the final fixture of match-day 30 Thursday night.

Goals from in-form Kwadwo Obeng Jnr. and Frederick Ansah Botchway gave the Phobians a commanding lead before Victorien Adebayor scored a brilliant free-kick that turned out to be a consolation for the Royals at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Samuel Boadu’s men started strongly only to be denied by Legon Cities goalkeeper Sylvester Sackey in the first minute of the game.

Legon Cities came closest to taking the lead when Victorien Adebayor’s strike hit the woodwork, only for Hearts to score first through Obeng Jnr. just moments later with an easy tap-in after being set up by Daniel Afriyie Barnieh who dribbled two markers in the 29th minute.

Midfielder Frederick Ansah Botchway then delivered a sweet strike from long range to increase the lead for the Phobians in the 38th minute.

Victorian Adebayor scored from a free-kick to reduce the deficit for Legon Cities in the 41st minute. It was his first goal for the club.

Legon Cities dominated proceedings from the 74th minute in search of the equalizer but the Hearts defense were up to the task.

Jonah Attuquaye’s brilliant run into the box for Legon Cities was blocked by the Hearts defenders to prevent an equalizer.

Hearts of Oak talisman Ibrahim Salifu picked up an injury and was replaced by Victor Aidoo in the 86th minute.

The Phobians held onto the lead to record another win and are now unbeaten in 11 games across all competitions.

Hearts of Oak are top of the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League standings tied on 56 points with sworn rivals Kotoko who they host on match-day 31 this Sunday.
