#GPLwk26: Kotoko draw at home to WAFA, surrender top spot to Hearts

Asante Kotoko lost top spot to arch-rivals Hearts of Oak as they dropped two points for the second week running after a 1-1 draw at home to WAFA SC in a 2020/21 Ghana Premier League match-day 26 tie Saturday afternoon.

The in-form Phobians had secured a 1-0 win at Eleven Wonders the previous day to move top on 46 points, putting pressure on the Porcupines who were on 45.

And Kotoko scored early at the Len Clay Stadium to somewhat calm nerves through an Abdul Ganiyu Ismail spot-kick in the third minute after striker Andy Kumi was brought down by WAFA goalkeeper Kwadwo Osei Bonsu.

Despite going down, the visitors looked the better side in an end-to-end first-half action.

And second window signing Justus Torsutsey pulled WAFA level just before the break with a powerful header off a Nii Bortey cross from the right.

The equalizing goal – which is the striker’s 4th in 9 appearances for the Academy Boys – proved vital as the two sides failed to produce any further goal in the second half to settle for a share of the spoils.

Kotoko’s best chance of the second 45 came for new signing and second-half substitute Solomon Sarfo Taylor, who for lack of better decision making, laid the ball towards Andy Kumi instead of aiming at goal.

The 1-1 draw is not enough for Asante Kotoko to continue to stay above Hearts of Oak, who now lead with a superior goal difference. Both teams are on 46 points each after 26 matches.

Asante Kotoko left-back Imoro Ibrahim was adjudged NASCO man-of-the-match.
