Wamanafo Mighty Royals handed home ban, fined GH¢20k for referees assault

Ghana Division One League side, Wamanafo Might Royals, have been banned from playing matches at their home grounds and fined a total of GH¢20,000 for beating up match officials following their game against Tano Bofoakwa over three weeks ago.

Irate fans of Mighty Royals mercilessly beat up Referee Niatire Suntuo Aziz and his assistants Suleman Mohammed, Yakubu Abdul Rahman as well as the fourth referee Hasim Yakubu after their game with Bofoakwa ended 0-0 a the Wamanafo Community Park.

After the full-time whistle, the aggrieved fans of Wamanfo Mighty Royals besieged the main gate to attack the referees for what the fans perceived to be unfair officiating against their club.

One referee lost his front teeth as a result and the Ghana Football Association subsequently flew the officials to Accra for medical care.

A temporary ban was then placed on the venue, and the club charged on six counts of misconduct by the GFA’s Disciplinary Committee.

They were found guilty on all six charges and handed the home ban, plus the GH¢20,000 fine, GH¢2,000 of which will be used to pay for the medical bills of the referees who were assaulted.
