Medeama eke out hard-fought win over 10-man Legon Cities

Medeama SC moved into the top four places after match-day 20 of the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League (GPL) thanks to a hard-fought 2-1 win over 10-man Legon Cities at Akoon Park Sunday afternoon.

It was Prince Opoku Agyemang who opened the scoring middway into the first half, a timely goal after skidding past goalkeeper Winfred Hornu in the 23rd minute.

The visiting Royals – with the trio of Jonah Attuquaye, Hans Kwofie and Victorien Adebayor in attack – began brightly and could count themselves unlucky to fall behind.

But the free-flowing game was nearly marred by an awkward scene moments to half which had Legon Cities centre-back Joseph Adjei sent off for a horrendous tackle on Justice Blay.

The Medeama midfielder had to be rushed to the hospital for treatment of what appeared a season-ending injury to his right leg.

Blay’s place was taken over by Kwasi Donsu who will later turn the hero for the hosts but, for a spell, the game turned physical with hard tackles flying in from the Medeama players who had their player badly injured.

After some good moments of possession led by Nigerien Victorien Adebayor, Legon Cities found the equalizer through Issaka Mohammed who fed on a rebound in the 79th minute after goalkeeper Frank Boateng failed to  efficiently deal with the former’s initial effort.

But the level-pegging status was short-lived.

Hans Kwofie – the former Medeama forward – failed to convert for Legon Cities after opting to go for glory in a one-on-one situation with goalkeeper Boateng when he also had the option of setting up a teammate to score.

Medeama turned defence into attack and punished the Royals as Donsu powered home a cracker to give the hosts a 2-1 lead and the match winner six minutes from time.

The Mauve and Yellows now move to 33 points while Legon Cities stay on 22 and flirt with relegation after 20 matches.
