Black Princesses: Ben Fokuo replaces Basigi as head coach

Ben Fokuo is the new coach of the Ghana women’s Under-20 national team, the Black Princesses.

He takes over from Yusif Basigi who had held the position since July 2017.

Basigi’s mandate as Princesses coach was maintained by the new Kurt Okraku-led Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) in January 2020 but has now been removed from the post after some 15 months.

The astute women football trainer’s – who previously handled the Black Queens – was tasked to qualify Ghana for the 2020 Fifa U-20 Women’s World Cup but COVID-19 happened and led to both Caf and Fifa cancelling the qualifiers and the tournament itself.

A GFA announcement Thursday read:

“Ben Fokuo has been appointed as Head Coach of the Black Princesses.

“The former Ghana player now takes over as Coach of the female U-20 national team after working as Black Starlets Coach for one year.

“Ben Fokuo replaces Yussif Basigi and will be assisted by Imoro Amadu and Dora Zutah as Assistant one and two respectively.”

Fokuo’s Black Starlets failed to qualify for the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations tournament which was eventually cancelled a few months ago. He would be hoping to get things right after being given another national team duty with the Princesses.

There is also a return to fold for Dora Zutah who previously worked as an assistant to Basigi at the Black Princesses from 2017 until last year’s shake-up by the GFA.

Dora Zutah – Assistant Coach
