4-0, Elmina Sharks handed worst GPL defeat by Liberty

Liberty Professionals handed Elmina Sharks their heaviest defeat in Ghana Premier League (GPL) history after trouncing them 4-0 Saturday afternoon.

The 2020/21 GPL match-day 19 fixture had to be played at Sogakope following the revocation of the license for Liberty’s traditional home grounds, the Carl Reindorf Park in Dansoman.

Paul Kwame gave the Scientific soccer lads a first-half lead with a headed goal in the 36th minute.

Liberty produced three more in the second 45.

Simon Appiah Asamoah doubled the advantage on the hour mark while Kweku Karikari made it 3-0 by converting a penalty in the 80th minute.

Former Asante Kotoko striker William Opoku Mensah came off the bench in the 86th minute and scored the fourth goal within three minutes of his introduction.

The 4-0 humiliation is Elmina Sharks’ heaviest defeat since their promotion to the Ghana Premier League – the 2016/17 campaign.

Earlier this season, they conceded the same number of goals in a single match but managed to halve the deficit as they got beaten 4-2 by AshantiGold in Obuasi on December 13.

Liberty Professionals remain second from bottom of the league standings on 18 points despite the heavy win.
