Ambrosius snubs Black Stars call-up for Germany U-21s
Hamburg SV defender, Stephan Kofi Ambrosius has declined his call-up to the Ghana senior national team to continue his development with Germany’s Under-21s.
The centre-back was named in the German squad for the group stage of this summer’s U-21 European Championship in Hungary and Slovenia.
But Ghana head coach CK Akonnor – who had held talks with the 22-year-old last year – decided to make an audacious attempt to steal him from Germany’s grasp by inviting him for his first senior international cap in the impending crucial Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers against South Africa and Sao Tome.
According to sources, Ambrosius feels boxed in a tight corner with Ghana’s decision to counter his call-up to the German youth team days after his selection was made public by coach Stefan Kuntz.
Faced with a difficult and urgent decision, Kofi Ambrosius – who is born to Ghanaian parents – has opted to stay and play for Germany but the decision does not make him ineligible for future selections by the Black Stars if he so wishes.
Ghana’s Black Stars are set to face the Bafana Bafana on March 25 in Johannesburg before hosting Sao Tome and Principe at the Accra Sports Stadium three days later.
The Black Stars, though sit top of Group C, tie on same points – 9 – with next opponents South Africa after four qualifying matches.
