Afcon 2021Q: Portugal-based Gideon Mensah withdraws from Ghana games

The left-back won't be available for Ghana against South Africa and Sao Tome.

Defender Gideon Mensah has become the latest player to withdraw from the Ghana squad due to a knee injury.

The left-back was named in the Black Stars 29-man squad by coach CK Akonnor last Thursday, for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifying matches against South Africa and São Tomé this week.

Mensah was expected to join up the Black Stars’ squad on Monday.

But the 22-year-old has been forced to pull himself out of the squad after failing to recover from a knock in his knee that had him taken off at halftime of Vitoria Guimaraes’ 4-2 home defeat to Gil Vicente in the Portuguese Primera Liga on Sunday, March 14,

Asante Kotoko’s Ibrahim Imoro is expected to be called up in his place for the crucial qualifiers.

Ghana, currently level on points – 9 – with South Africa, lead Group C of the Afcon qualifiers on goal difference.

A result against the Bafana Bafana at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg in the penultimate qualifier on Thursday, March 25 eases the Black Stars qualification to the tournament scheduled for Cameroon next year.

The Black Stars will complete the qualification process against São Tomé and Principe at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, March 28.
