#GPLwk16: Kotoko vs Bechem called off due to heavy downpour

The 2020/21 Ghana Premier League (GPL) match-day 16 fixture between Asante Kotoko and Bechem United has been postponed after heavy rain made the pitch unplayable Thursday night.

The match was to get underway at 18:00 GMT but a downpour in the Ghanaian capital forced officials to delay kickoff.

After about 35 minutes, referee Jacob Aduntera and other appointed match officials inspected the state of the Accra Sports Stadium pitch before officially deciding the game could not hold.

It could be a blessing in disguise for the Porcupines, who had hoped for the fixture originally fixed for Wednesday to be rescheduled to a later date after only arriving from a Caf Confederation Cup trip to Algeria on Monday.

But the GFA opted to shift the game to Thursday night.

Kotoko are to play arch-rivals Hearts of Oak less than 72 hours after tonight’s abandoned fixture, hence decided to significantly alter their starting line-up to face Bechem United.

Top striker Kwame Opoku – who is a card away from suspension -, as well as first-choice goalkeeper Razak Abalora, were completely rested from the match-day squad while four other starters – Christopher Nettey, Emmanuel Sarkodie, Ismail Ganiu and Brazilian playmaker Fabio Gama were to start from the bench.

It is unknown if the Kotoko-Bechem match-day 16 clash will be made to come off on Friday.
