Sudan vs Ghana: Akonnor falls on Fatau Dauda as Richard Ofori is suspended

Experienced goalkeeper Fatau Dauda has been roped in late for Black Stars’ trip to Sudan for day four of their 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifying.

Team Ghana had to depart without second deputy skipper Richard Ofori who was discovered to have been suspended from the game scheduled for Tuesday, November 17 due to card accumulation.

The Orlando Pirates shot-stopper picked up his second yellow card in last Thursday’s 2-0 victory over Sudan at Cape Coast, thus ruling him out of the subsequent game in the Group C qualifiers.

As a result, the Black Stars technical handlers have opted to back Lawrence Ati-Zigi and Razak Abalora with an experienced pair of hands by recalling Dauda who kept the post for Legon Cities in their 2020/21 Ghana Premier League opener Saturday night.

Dauda, 35, who made his debut for Ghana in 2008, had not been involved with the senior national team action since the 2017 Afcon.

The Black Stars departed Accra for Omdurman, Sudan Sunday afternoon.

Tuesday’s game is scheduled for Al-Hilal Stadium with kickoff set at 13:00 GMT.

A win for Ghana (already on 9 points from three games) means automatic qualification to Cameroon 2021 Afcon which will rather be played in January 2022.

The 23-man squad for the trip:

Lawrence Ati-Zigi, Razak Abalora, Fatau Dauda
