Clottey injury time goal saves Berekum Chelsea from defeat to Kotoko

Golden City not a happy hunting grounds for the Porcupine Warriors. Still winless there

An Emmanuel Clottey last-gasp bullet free-kick for Berekum Chelsea denied Asante Kotoko victory in their 2020/21 Ghana Premier League match-day 2 clash at the Golden City Park Sunday afternoon.

The Porcupines left Berekum heartbroken as Clottey ensured the spoils were shared by cancelling Kwame Poku’s first-half lead with his powerful free-kick strike in the final of six minutes additional time.

The Bibres did not begin the match on strong footing despite their eagerness to record their first win this season after drawing at Legon Cities on match-day one.

It was the visitors who netted first through Kwame Poku on the 18th minute after a quick pass from Osman Ibrahim on the left flank.

Berekum Chelsea pressed for the equalizer in the remaining minutes of the first half but upfront, Stephen Sarfo, Kofi Owusu and Stephen Amankonah struggled against the Kotoko defence.

After recess, Chelsea tried to use set pieces to claim the much-needed leveller but Kotoko stayed strong.

From the 75th minute, the Reds withdrew back to protect their lead and relied on counter-attacks to stretch the lead.

Chelsea coach Hesse Odametten introduced Emmanuel Clottey for Kofi Owusu to continue the pressure and it resulted to Kotoko causing more fouls in dangerous positions of their half.

But Felix Annan stood between the Bibires and their pursuit for goal. The goalkeeper had to subbed off for Kwame Baah after suffering a serious injury in the 90th minute.

With the duel in 6 minutes of injury time, Chelsea kept pushing and once again, they had a free-kick just in front of Kotoko’s 18-yard box.

Clottey stepped and smashed a powerful strike past Kwame Baah to send the home side in delight after referee Daniel Laryea whistled to end the clash.

Asante Kotoko face Great Olympics on match-day 3 at the Accra Sports Stadium while Chelsea travel to Cape Coast for their next fixture against Ebusua Dwarfs.
