Afcon 2021Q: Sudan leave it late to pip Ghana
The Black Stars now have to wait for their next win to qualify for the tournament in Cameroon.
Sudan struck late through Mohamed Abdul Rahman to beat Ghana 1-0 in their fourth Group C game in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifying Tuesday afternoon.
It is the first goal conceded and ultimately defeat for the Black Stars who had won all three previous matches in the run-up to the Cameroon Afcon.
Ghana looked bright from start, outplaying and attacking their hosts but fizzled out by the 20th-minute mark.
Sudan controlled most part of the possession while missing some good chances.
Their luck finally shone in the dying embers of the game as dangerman Mohamed Abdul Rahman was allowed to head the ball into the Ghana net from close range.
The goal came just on the 90th-minute mark with the three additional minutes shown by referee Joshua Bondo proving not enough for the Stars to stage a comeback.
The 1-0 defeat throws Group C wide open with South Africa – Ghana’s next opponents – moving to nine points after back-to-back wins over Sao Tome.
Despite sitting atop Group C with a better goal and head-to-head advantage, Coach CK Akonnor and his men have to wait for their next win to book their qualification to a 23rd continental outing.
They have a trip to South Africa and Sao Tome at home on March 22 and 30th, 2021 respectively on the cards to complete their qualification campaign.
The 2021 Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled to be played in January 2022.
