Four referees risk missing 2020/21 season over integrity issues

Centre referees Alphonso Atiapa and Desmond Abbey as well as assistant John Nyavor have been expunged from the list of match officials to undergo fitness tests for the 2020/21 football season.

According to a publication on the official website of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), the trio have been referred to the Ethics Committee by the GFA Integrity Officer.

“This follows a report from the Referees Committee on a case of allegedly receiving an offer from a football club during the cancelled league season.

“After conducting investigations into the case by Integrity Officer, the matter has been forwarded to the Ethics Committee for adjudication,” parts read.

The publication continued that these officials, who have been omitted from the list of referees for fitness tests for the upcoming season, “would be given the opportunity to go through the fitness tests later if they are cleared by the Ethics Committee.”

Relatedly, referee Daniel Kwame Nsiah – whose case is also before the Ethics Committee – is also excluded from the list in accordance with the regulations.

Meanwhile, Referee Nathan Anafo has been included in the list of referees set to undergo the fitness tests after being exonerated from allegations captured in the Anas exposé video by the Fifa Disciplinary Committee.
