U-20: Division One should be given attention in selection process-McCarthy

Young forward, Francis McCarthy wants attention given the Division One League in the process of the Under-20 national team selection.

McCarthy, who had a short but successful term with Accra City Stars in the truncated 2019/20 season, believes there are quality players in the Division One League who can boost the junior national teams.

Speaking to Footy-Ghana.com’s Adamu Muftawu, the energetic forward wants players from the second-tier by national team selectors.

“In one of the games I played against Vision FC, there was this player by name Aziz Nurudeen. He signed and played for Hearts of Oak in the just truncated Ghana League. He was also selected for the U-23 Olympic qualifiers in Egypt.

“I think for the selection of the national team players, if not the Premier League and their junior clubs, those in Division One get little chance.

“We get little chance of being selected and I hope things will change,” McCarthy said.

The 19-year-old was plagued by injuries last season but recovered to enjoy a brilliant moment with ACS.

McCarthy, who has a soft spot for AshantiGold, wants to play a full season with his current side before considering offers locally or abroad.

“I want to get a complete full season at Accra City Stars because we could not complete the league due to COVID-19.

“I even didn’t start with them during the league because of injury.

“I missed four matches from the start and recovered for the Tema Youth game.

“I got injured again in a game against Uncle T Stars but now I’m okay and ready for the league.

“I want to play a full season with ACS before I will consider a local or a foreign club,” McCarthy said

Francis McCarthy started his football with De Gunners FC, the club that produced Dalian Yifang’s Emmanuel Boateng and former Istanbulspor midfielder Mohammed Karim.

He joined lower-tier side New Generation Sporting Club where he spent three season successful seasons.

He caught the eyes of Division One League side, Accra City Stars, formerly Sporting Mirren where he currently plies his trade.
