COVID-19: Sports Ministry to roll out financial support for footballers

The Sports Ministry is mapping out plans to financially help footballers contain the challenges and difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ghanaian sportsmen have been hit hard financially following the absence of sports activities for the past three months.

The global pandemic forced some football clubs to propose salary cuts for players as they are cash-strapped.

In a media interaction to update Ghanaians on the COVID-19 ease of restrictions in his sector Wednesday, Sports Minister Isaac Asiamah disclosed his outfit’s resolve to assist athletes in these difficult times.

“The major concern now is about our athletes/footballers. They are the hardest hit. How do we support them?

“There is an ongoing project within the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) that is going to be rolled out to support them [with some allowance],” he stated.

Last Sunday, president of Ghana, Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo announced that contact sports, with football inclusive, will not resume until July 31.

The announcement has received mixed reactions and feelings among football clubs across Ghana.

The 2019/20  Ghana football season, which was nearing the halfway stage, has been suspended for the past three months.
