Black Stars captaincy: Kwasi Appiah urges adoption of rotation policy

Immediate-past Ghana coach, James Kwasi Appiah has urged new handlers of the Black Stars to apply a rotation policy for the side’s captaincy.

Appiah named Andre Ayew as the new Black Stars captain ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

Per the decision, Asamoah Gyan withdrew his services for the national team till the intervention of Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo for the top scorer to make a comeback to the squad.

Now a former coach of the national team, Appiah believes rotating captains is the solution to the captaincy matter of the Stars.

“Sometimes this captaincy issue comes as a result of poor communication from management members or certain people trying to push their own agenda.

“Looking at our current situation I will propose we rotate the captain’s armband and also a general captain appointed to speak on behalf of the players,” the 59-year-old told Happy FM.

“Brazil and other countries have made it work so we can also emulate them.

“We should be careful or else this captaincy row can affect the national team for years to come.

Selecting a captain for the team should be the responsibility of the coach,” Appiah concluded.

Andre Dede Ayew remains the Black Stars captain.
