$185k debt: We shall pay ‘gentleman’ Kwasi Appiah – Sports Minister assures

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Isaac Asiamah says his outfit will ensure the payment of ex-Black Stars head coach, James Kwasi Appiah.

The Minister revealed in a press briefing of the easing of restrictions on sporting activities in the current climate of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Coach Kwasi Appiah has done a lot for Ghana. We have nothing against him.

“We gave him an appointment for two years. And for the two years, we did not owe him a pesewa; we paid everything but it is the contract extension that is left with about three months.

“It is not that we are disrespecting or not showing concern to the gentleman. We give him that respect as a Ghanaian.

“When I became the Minister, we owed Avram Grant at that time but we paid him off. So I can assure the nation that gradually, we shall pay Kwasi Appiahall his entitlements,” Asiamah stated.

“We love him as a Ghanaian. He is one of our own. We can never do anything against coach Kwasi Appiah; he’s done a lot for mother Ghana. We respect him. He is a gentleman,” the Minister added.

Since March 2020, the 59-year-old tactician has been very public against the Ghana Football Association concerning his outstanding salary arrears of five months (between August and December 2019) amounting to $185,000.

Footy-Ghana sources revealed Appiah last received a salary in July 2019.

In an interview on Starr FM May, the coach expressed his dissatisfaction on the FA’s negligence towards his situation.

“It looks like they don’t care. This is money I have worked for and they are not telling me anything which I feel doesn’t show a sign of respect and I think that my lawyers need to deal with it. So it’s either they will take it to the court or Fifa.

The GFA hasn’t called me, neither has the Ministry.”

Kwasi Appiah’s contract with the GFA ended in December last year.
